Hyperinsulinism
Incidence
Unknown. Produce hypoglycemia related to over-utilization of glucose.
Clinical Characteristics
Children are basically normal, except reccurrent attacks of non-ketotic hypoglycemia, which occur less than one hour after beginning fasting. There is low free fatty acids during hypoglycemia.
Precipitants
Fasting less than one hour.
Provocation Tests
Fasting will produce non-ketotic hypoglycemia less than one hour of tolerance of fasting.
Diagnostic Procedures
High insulin levels in plasma. High insulin/glucose ratio. High insulin/3-HB ratio. Low plasma FFA with normal FFA/3-HB ratio.
